Empowering Families and Communities :Cows Project

by Wings of Hope for Africa Foundation

This project will purchase of livestock for 10 families in the community of Kivumu, Burundi. More specifically, we would like to procure 18 cows and 2 bulls. This purchase will not only benefit the families that receive the cattle but also impact the entire community. The livestock will bring advantages such as manure to use a fertilizer, a more varied diet with the addition of extra dairy, and a wider variety of products to sell at the marketplace.
Many families have small areas of land but lack the knowledge and means to use it effectively. Our goal is to provide families with livestock and training on how to prepare and care for the cattle, in order for them to become successful farmers and get the most out of their land. A sustainable farm will:
1) Create food security, end hunger, and lead to increased quality of health. Manure from cows creates nutrient-rich soil for better crops. A diversified diet will lead to better nutrition. And when a calf is born, a cow can give up to 20 litres of milk per day.
2) Create community support, confidence and hope for a better future. Successful farms can be a source of employment, bringing lasting wealth to a community.
3) Increase income for better homes, healthcare and education. Families can sell produce and milk at local markets. The methane from biofuel not used for manure can be used for cooking and lighting. Money saved can be invested back into their farms, enhancing their success with the purchase of new seeds, small business, goats or chicken

The purchase of 18 cows and 2 bulls will support 10 families in Kivumu, Burundi with improved nutrition from milk products, fertilizer for gardens and methane from biofuel for light and cooking. When a calf is born, a cow can give up to 20 litres of milk per day.

Small additions to diet can improve the lives of children and families significantly. The garden project in Buterere succeeded in increasing the number of meals each family had access to per day from 1 to 2. This increased energy and reduced stomach problems associated with malnutrition. It is our trust that the Kivumu Cow project will further increase health and productivity. Manure from cows is used to increase crop yields; the methane produced is used for lighting and cooking. Sale of cow products at market allows families to purchase seeds, small business, goats and chickens.

Aline Nzeyimana, founder of Wings of Hope for Africa is herself from Burundi. She began the organization in 2011 with the intention of assisting children and families in Burundi. Since 2011, Wings of Hope for Africa has successfully completed 40 projects related to food security, education and agriculture in Kivumu and Buterere, Burundi

Families experience long-term benefits from additional nutrition, training and, of course, from having the cows and bulls.

Families experience long-term benefits from receiving training on how to prepare and care for cattle. Cows produce calves each year which increases the sustainability of the project.

This project will cost $25,000 cad
